Ever since Hot Toys announced that they were going to be producing a collectible figure of Agent Coulson as part of their Avengers line-up of figures, we’ve been counting the days for this figure’s release. We just received our Hot Toys Agent Phil Coulson figure and as such a review is for what is arguably one of the Avengers fans favorite support character.
First appearing in Iron Man, then Iron Man II, followed by Thor and finally The Avengers, Agent Phil Coulson is ingeniously portrayed by actor Clark Greg who helped elevate this character’s status as one of the most beloved by fans. Not only is Coulson a bad-ass undercover agent who can take out two armed robbers with nothing more than , but he is also tasked with putting our superheroes egos in check while performing his other duties as a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative. Agent Coulson makes a comeback this fall on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD on ABC this fall.
The Hot Toys Agent Phil Coulson figure ships in the standard Hot Toys packaging. There is a slide off outer sleeve that has a photo of Agent Coulson on the front and some legalese and warning information on the back with the sides having nothing more than a S.H.I.E.L.D. logo. Upon removing the sleeve, you have the figure with all the accessories sitting neatly and securely inside a plastic container and all the parts further protected by a clear plastic hard cover allowing you to see the items inside without having to remove them from their packaging. Of course, that’s not what we are here for; we want to take this baby out and see what it has to offer, so without further ado…..
The Hot Toys Agent Phil Coulson figure is presented here as he appears in the all the movies, wearing a black suit and buttoned white shirt. The Clothing is fitted to the body but doesn’t constrain his movement as with some of the other releases (). The craftsmanship that has gone into the clothing is of very high quality with a detailed striped white shirt and a detailed tie to go along with it. The pants are plain black pants and come equipped with a belt made of leather and a metal buckle. The suit is also plain black with two non-usable side pockets and a suit tie pocket which has a small pocket opening which can be used to attach Agent Coulson’s S.H.I.E.L.D identification badge. The shoes are made of shiny plastic to mimic polished leather, and he also comes equipped with a pair of black socks. I can’t complain about the clothing with the possible minor exception being that the tie is a bit rigid and has a mind of its own and likes to poke out a lot. Nothing that can’t be fixed with a little bit of adjusting until it loosens a bit.
The body that Hot Toys used for this figure is the thin TrueType body type and is consistent with Clark Greg’s appearance in the movie. The actual head sculpt is outstanding and is unmistakably Clark Greg. The small wrinkles around and below the eyes, the detail in the chin and even the slight veins on the side of his temple. The level of detail that has gone into the head sculpt is quite amazing down to the way Clark Greg parts his hair. As mentioned above, this figure is very flexible and posable and should satisfy most collectors who like to experiment with different poses. The figure ships with five total interchangeable hands, three right hands, and two left hands. The default hands attached to the figure are relaxed and slightly open and allow Coulson to hold some of his accessories, the other hands are specifically designed for holding and handling the two included weapons which we will get to next.
Agent Coulson ships with some accessories that put some of the newly announced releases to shame (Man of Steel). He comes equipped with a smartphone, a walkie-talkie, a set of Captain America cards covered with blood, a security level 7 classified dossier, a S.H.I.E.L.D. badge, sunglasses, a wristwatch, and a Bluetooth headset. On the weapons side, he comes equipped with a pistol and a S.H.I.E.L.D. Destroyer Gun which has a light up feature and an adjustable scope and rifle butt. Overall, you get a very nice selection of accessories, more than you would expect for a release at this price level.
This latest figure from Hot Toys hits all the marks and delivers the goods at a very reasonable price of $174.99. Unfortunately, he is only available through Sideshow Toys who are sold out but are still taking waiting list orders. You can try your luck at the waiting list, or you are going to have to hit eBay and pay $250 and up to get him. I highly recommend this figure. I cannot find a single fault with this release with the minor exception being the tie which is easily corrected. If you are a Clark Greg or Agent Phil Coulson fan, you owe it to yourself to get this figure.
